' ............Volunteers
desperately scrabbled away the mud and rubble from around him. People noticed
the boy’s head. His thick black hair was matted with blood and dust. His face
and the top of his checked red shirt were stained with dried blood from a large
head wound. His right leg, pinned under the lower end of the cupboard at an
awkward angle, was definitely broken. He looked deathly pale and drawn.
An
intern scrambled down to check the boys pulse and let out a whoop of relief.
‘He’s
ALIVE!’ the young doctor shouted up to the rescue team waiting at the side of the
fallen building. Several onlookers
shouted ‘Hurry, hurry!’
Willing
hands helped to lift the unconscious boy gently from the masonry around him but
the boy didn’t feel a thing. Quickly they
moved him into a waiting ambulance. He did not know about the severe earthquake
that had struck Gujarat five days before. Nor the fact that he was the only
survivor in his building..........'
